Why is it important?

We all know that Microsoft is always concerned about the security of its clients and data protection which enhances user privacy. It helps the user to easily access their external and internal resource i.e. Microsoft 365, the Azure portal, the Organization’s own app, and thousands of other SaaS applications.

What is Microsoft Entra and Entra ID?

Microsoft Entra expanded its leg and became Microsoft Entra ID. Hahaha..! Well, It was not so funny…!

In simple words, Microsoft Entra ID is a foundational product of Microsoft Entra. Where Entra is a family of access and network products and with ID it enables cloud-based identity and access management services.

Mostly it is used to sign in and protect identity for Microsoft Online services like M365 and AAD. Users can freely use Entra with any Microsoft business subscription as well as use paid-up features by upgrading to P1 and P2 licenses.

In addition to P1 and P2 licenses, the user can also unlock additional authentication features with other Microsoft Entra products such as:

Microsoft Entra ID Governance

Microsoft Entra Permissions Management

Etc.

Difference between Active Directory and Microsoft Entra

Both Active Directory and Microsoft Entra products are developed for security reasons. But Active Directory Domain service in Windows 2000 is used to manage multiple on-premises infrastructures using a single identity. Within the on-premises environment, users can manage access, policies, and other resources in the network.

While Entra uses IDAAS (Identity as a Service) for all its cloud and on-premises apps/services.

Choose Your Role for Microsoft Entra

There are some differences between a user role and their use of Entra ID. Let’s see:

IT Admin: This huge role allows the admin to manage apps and resources based on organization use like multifactor authentication. When certain details match with the authenticator then the user can access their data.

App Developers:  It helps users to authenticate and single-sign-in process with the develop solution. Also use the Entra Api to modify, authenticate, and authorize the environment of organization data access.

Subscriber: Those who use Office 365, Azure, and Dynamic CRM online can also enable the Entra ID to manage access and cloud resources.
