Move files from OneDrive to SharePoint – Step by Step

Both OneDrive and SharePoint can be used together to store and share files within an organization. However, it is important to note that OneDrive is intended for personal use, while SharePoint is intended for team collaboration.

How to Move OneDrive Files to SharePoint Online?

Moving files from one drive to SharePoint can be done in a few different ways, depending on the size and number of files you need to transfer. Here are some methods for moving files from OneDrive to SharePoint:

To Move files from OneDrive to SharePoint, you must have a Microsoft 365 subscription that includes OneDrive and SharePoint.

Method 1: follow the steps to move files from OneDrive to SharePoint

  • Open OneDrive and go to the My Files section.

  • Select files that you want to move from Onedrive.
  • Right-click on selected files and click on the Move to button.

  • Here, select the team shown on the left pane and click move here.

That’s it. Your selected files will be moved to the SharePoint team’s site.

Methods 2: Move OneDrive files to SharePoint Online using Power Automate

If you want that the file you put in OneDrive should be automatically moved to SharePoint. So you have to make a flowchart.

Follow the steps to move files with Automate facility:

  • Go to OneDrive and go to my files section.
  • In the right pane, click on Automate>> Power Automate>> Create Flow and click on see your flows.
  • Otherwise, go to flow.microsoft.com

  • Here, click on New flow>> Automate cloud flow.

  • A new pane opens on the right. Here give the name of the flow.
  • In the below section choose the flow trigger. Select “when File is Created”>> click on Create Button.

  • Select a folder > Click on the folder Icon and select Root folder and click on Next step.

  • In the search bar, search get file content and select file path as File name >> click on Next step.

  • Choose an operation >> search create file >> select Create File with share point Icon.

  • Here, you should enter four things.
    • First, enter a site name >> give the email address of your Microsoft account.
    • Second, enter a folder path >> select shared Folder.
    • Third, give a file name >> search file name and select a file name with the OneDrive icon.
    • Forth, Search file content and select the OneDrive icon.
    • Then click on Next Step.

  • In the Next step, you should choose a delete a file. Search delete the file and select it.
  • In the Folder option select File Identifier.
  • Click on the Save button to save the flow.

Now you can test the flow that you have made. To test the flow open your OneDrive and upload a file from your local PC. Go to the flow chart tab you can see the process is running step by step. After a few seconds, the file will move to SharePoint’s shared folder and automatically be removed from the drive’s root folder.
